CECI's Riverwalk 2000 -- Year Three

The "Riverwalk." presentations were not working groups, as some of the original participants may recall from our meetings in 1995 through 1997. However, CECI returned to a working group in 2001 and resumed its activities as a vendor neutral group.

"Riverwalk" meetings were held at several CECI participants' facilities.  Despite the term, "Riverwalk," the meetings were not restricted to any particular geographic area.

Background:

In the January 1998 meeting, the Chicagoland Electronic Commerce Initiative discussed the concept of a "Riverwalk."  Several participants had high-tech facilities in the loop or near the river. The notion of the Riverwalk was to visit the facilities of some of Chicago's high-tech resources in a single day. However, the difficulties of visiting several facilities in a single day and the logistics of getting people from place to place inspired a slightly different concept (in 2000, the City of Chicago tried to do something similar with trolleys).

The Chicagoland Electronic Commerce Initiative held "Riverwalk" meetings at several different high-tech locations (the calendar from previous years appears below). The topics of discussion are usually related to the host's line of business. In most cases, the host (at the host's option) has allowed attendees to tour their facilities.

With the March 1999 meeting at the Chicago Bar Association (CBA), we entered the second year of "Riverwalks." More participants opened their doors (and, some, their new offices) as we continued our exploration of carriers, Internet Service Providers, software corporations and other commerce specialists.

2001:

CECI transitioned to a working group at the end of the Riverwalk. In the meantime, CECI also cross posts items of interest from several other Chicago organizations.

CECI jointly hosted meetings at the Chicago Bar Association. The chairs of the CBA Technology Committee often provide advance notices of CBA meetings and legal items of interest to CECI.  Other meetings have been held with AITP, CICA, SIM, and others.

Chicago's telecommunications infrastructure is not maturing as fast as systems in other markets.
Brain Drain: Some of Chicago's best an brightest are being drawn to the coasts because of a more rigid, midwest business development market.
